"Synergy, Commitment Are Key to Global Energy Sustainability, Says Bounour

23 Firms Report Over $1bn Revenue In Nigeria

Only 23 out of 345 companies with a turn over revenue of $1 billion in Africa (N1 trillion using official exchange rates), are in Nigeria,the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC),has said .

PEBEC disclosed this in its recently released 2024 Outlook document which also details the Secretariat’s work plan for 2024 along with expected outcomes.

Explaining the outlook, the Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing, Business, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said the federal government will roll out interventions this year to make businesses more viable.

“Out of the 345 USD1 billion companies in revenue in Africa, only 23 are in Nigeria. She noted that the decision to change models stems from the observation that larger businesses exhibit an ‘osmosis’ effect, leading to the clustering of stakeholders. She added: “It was determined that we will need to have this new approach to move faster and to grow the economy faster in these turbulent times.”

She said the federal government is set to launch an intervention program tagged the PEBEC Business Champions Program targeted at large and medium-scale businesses which will serve as one of the five strategic pillars PEBEC will be working with this year.

Speaking about the new intervention, she noted: “The Business Champions intervention targets medium to large-sized industries and there are two parts to that programme. The first part is to work with medium-sized enterprises and have a pilot cohort of about 25 businesses. This intervention will be a bespoke service to help these medium businesses navigate the business climate from the government’s perspective. The selection of businesses will be determined by factors such as revenue, tax contributions, job creation, sectors, and export proceeds,” Dr. Oduwole said.

Oduwole also noted that with the legislative intervention, there will be a further review of the Omnibus bill, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of over 40 law firms nationwide who volunteered their expertise pro bono to review approximately 21 business laws, culminating in the formation of the 2022 Omnibus bill.

NNPC Completes Mechanical Rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery Plant

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, says that it has mechanically completed the rehabilitation of Area 5 Plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC). The nation's oil company began rehabilitation of the refinery two years ago, while at the same time, promised to complete its by 31st December 2023. The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, said as of December 15th, 2023, 84.4% of Area 5 Plant, a key component of the Refinery, and 77.4% of the entire rehabilitation project have been completed. “In our quest to ensure that this refinery is re-streamed to continue to deliver value to Nigerians, we made a promise that we will reach a mechanical completion of phase one of the rehabilitation project by the end of December and get the other plants running in 2024. Fed Govt Commences New VAT Sept 1

By Favour & Akinola Ajibade Buoyed by the resolve to deepen the country's revenue base and further and further speed up implementation of capital projects in Nigeria, the  Federal Government will in the next six days, precisely September 1, this year, starts collecting the  new Value Added Tax( VAT).  The government is achieving  this goal through the Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS).  FIRS, in a statement,  said subject to the Finance Act 2023, VAT withheld or collected, VAT on items excluded from building, the new Tertiary Education Tax rate of 3 per cent and Investment Allowances and Convertible Currencies will become effective September 1, 2023. Certain amended provisions of the Finance Act 2023 were enacted on 28th May, 2023 with the effective date of 1st May 2023. However, the effective date was changed to 1st September 2023.
