"Synergy, Commitment Are Key to Global Energy Sustainability, Says Bounour

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade  The Chief Executive Officer, Egbin Power Plc, Mr Mohktar Bounour says global transition to cleaner energ and sustainable environment are achievable, as long as there is strong synergy and commitment among stakeholders in the value chain.  He spoke during the maiden edition of  Asharami Square in Lagos. This is an initiative introduced and implemented by the Sahara Group, in order to amplify discourse on energy sustainability through  media advocacy globally. He said: " Having analyzed the percentage of global greenhouse emissions attributed to sectors including electricity/heat production, agriculture/forestry and transportation, we are realised that there is need for synergy  and renewed commitment among stakeholders". FG, States, Local Governments Share N655.9b

The trio of Federal, States and Local Governments have shared N655.932 billion in April this year with a view to enable them manage the day-to-day administration of country.  

The shared funds came from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). 

This was disclosed in a communiqué issued at the end of the FAAC meeting for May 2023, according to a statement by its Director, Press and Public Relations, Stephen Kilebi.

The amount includes gross statutory revenue, value-added tax, exchange gain, electronic money transfer levies, and augmentations from forex and non-oil mineral revenue.

“The Federal Government received N248.809 billion, the states received N218.307 billion, the local government councils got N160.600 billion, while the oil producing states received N28.216 billion as derivation, (13% of mineral revenue).”

The gross revenue available from VAT for April 2023, was N217.743 billion, which was a decrease from the amount distributed in the preceding month.

“From that amount, the sum of N8.710 billion was allocated for costs of collection, and the sum of N6.271 was given for transfers and refunds. The remaining sum of N202.762 billion was distributed to the three tiers of government of which the Federal Government got N30.414 billion, the states received N101.381 billion, and local government councils got N70.967 billion.

“Accordingly, the gross statutory revenue of N497.463 billion received for the month was lower than the sum of N638.673 billion received in the previous month of March 2023. From that amount, the sum of N18.793 billion was given for the costs of collection and a total sum of N114.016 billion for transfers and refunds. The remaining balance of  N364.654 billion was distributed as follows: Federal Government was allocated the sum of N180.659 billion, states got N91.632 billion, LGCs got N70.647 billion, and oil derivation (13% mineral revenue) got N21.716 billion.

“Also, the sum of N15.121 billion from the Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) was distributed to the three (3) tiers of government as follows: the Federal Government received N2.177 billion, states got N7.258 billion, local government councils received N5.081 billion and the sum of N0.605 billion was allocated to costs of collection.”

NNPC Completes Mechanical Rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery Plant

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, says that it has mechanically completed the rehabilitation of Area 5 Plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC). The nation's oil company began rehabilitation of the refinery two years ago, while at the same time, promised to complete its by 31st December 2023. The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, said as of December 15th, 2023, 84.4% of Area 5 Plant, a key component of the Refinery, and 77.4% of the entire rehabilitation project have been completed. “In our quest to ensure that this refinery is re-streamed to continue to deliver value to Nigerians, we made a promise that we will reach a mechanical completion of phase one of the rehabilitation project by the end of December and get the other plants running in 2024. Fed Govt Commences New VAT Sept 1

By Favour & Akinola Ajibade Buoyed by the resolve to deepen the country's revenue base and further and further speed up implementation of capital projects in Nigeria, the  Federal Government will in the next six days, precisely September 1, this year, starts collecting the  new Value Added Tax( VAT).  The government is achieving  this goal through the Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS).  FIRS, in a statement,  said subject to the Finance Act 2023, VAT withheld or collected, VAT on items excluded from building, the new Tertiary Education Tax rate of 3 per cent and Investment Allowances and Convertible Currencies will become effective September 1, 2023. Certain amended provisions of the Finance Act 2023 were enacted on 28th May, 2023 with the effective date of 1st May 2023. However, the effective date was changed to 1st September 2023. Some of the amended Sections are 14 (3) which deals on VAT Withheld or Collected. The VAT Act was amended to the effect that persons
