Lagos Airport was shut down, yesterday in response to the warning strike announced by workers in the nation's aviation industry.
The workers had last friday, slated two days (Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th April) respectively for their warning strike, with a view to express their grievances and further force Federal Government to improve their working conditions and other issues militating against their operations.
Part of their demands, include provision of enough jet fuel in order to forestall grounding of domestic flights and foreign currency, which has seen international carriers failing to repatriate their ticket sales.
Protesting workersOthers are payment of national minimum wage and its consequential adjustment.
These among others led to the closure of access roads to the international and domestic wings of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State by aviation workers protesting the Federal Government’s failure to address their concerns.
Expectedly, the issue caused serious gridlock around the Airport Road in Ikeja, with the entrance to the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two terminal hugely affected.
Also, the gridlock led to a lot of anxiety and panic among travellers who are desperate to fly out of Lagos through the airport efforts to catch their flights.
.Meanwhile, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) chapter of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has advised travellers and stakeholders to make contingency plans in order to avoid missing their flights and appointments.
FAAN’s statement was in response to the two-day strike the aviation unions, which it said could disrupt scheduled flight operations.
According to the statement, NAIA would be open for operations as usual. It, however, warned that passengers may experience “disruptions in flights operations as a result of the planned strike action”.
