The ban on trycles popularly known as (okada) in Lagos and beyond continues,as the state government impounded and crushed 2,000 more of such means of transportation days ago.
Altogether, the total number of Okada seized and destroyed in the last five months was 7,000.
Data compiled by the News Mirror showed that these okadas worth almost N1.4 billion.
Recall that the government had last Friday, crushed and apprehended motorcycles, at its Taskforce’s Crushing Centre, Ikeja.
Speaking on the issue, the state's Commissioner for Transportation Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said the idea is to prevent the okada from finding their way into the streets.
Oladeinde, who supervised the crushing exercise, commended the security operatives for enforcing the total ban order across all the affected 15 local councils.
He said the development goes a long way to show that the government is frowning at the issue.
The exercise, the commissioner said, brings the total number of 7,000 crushed okadas to 7,000 in the last five months.
He noted that about 5,000 okadas had earlier been crushed in the first quarter of year 2022.
Investigations showed that the market price for a new motorcycle is between N300,000 and N350, 0000 while a ‘second hand’ Okada goes for N150,000. With an average of N200,000 per one, the 7,000 Okada destroyed by Lagos in the last fo months are more than N1.4 billion.
In a related development, Oladeinde urged Lagosians to stop patronising okada and to use the alternative First and Last Mile Buses provided by the government.
Responding to complaints coming from places like Apapa, where the people are finding it tough because of the ban on Okada's operation, the commissioner said the people should show more understanding as the directive is in the overall interest of all citizens of the state.
