FG- Imo: :Regulatory Oversight of The State Electricity Market Is Now Underr ISERC

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade  The Federal Government yesterday( Monday) announced the transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market in Imo State to the state electricity regulatory commission, otherwise known as (ISERC). In a statement issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Common( NERC), the development is in compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), reiterating that all transfers envisaged by this order shall be completed by 31 December 2024. According to the Commission,the transfer Order’s provisions include: “Direct Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to incorporate a subsidiary (EEDC SubCo) to assume responsibilities for intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Imo State from EEDC, and that EEDC shall complete the incorporation of EEDC SubCo within 60 days from 27th June 2024. The Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) has elected Comrade Joe Ajaero as its new President, a development, which was brought about the exit of Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who successful completed  two terms in office this year.

He served as the nation's labour union for  eight years ( 2015-2023).

The new President is expected to serve the apex labour union for a term of four years or at most two, just as Wabba did. 

Expectedly, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the newly elected president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero as he pledged to reawaken the spirit of the labour movement to become the true champions of the Nigerian people.

According to him, NLC would cry the cries of the Nigerian masses and jointly wage wars against all forces of impoverishment and misery, adding that, the current electricity tariff and provisioning had remained stacked against Nigerian workers and masses, adding that NLC would work with government to bring sanity to sector.

“We urge the federal government again to review the privatisation of the electricity sector; a process both the government and all of us have agreed was mired in corruption,” he said.

In his acceptance speech after being unanimously elected at the 13th Quadrennial Delegates Conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Ajaero said he would be seeking deeper engagement with governments at all levels more creatively to sustain the philosophical foundations and traditions of the congress.

Prior to this period, Ajaero was the  General  Secretary of Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), 



who vowed not fail Nigerian workers and people said the leadership of the congress would seek platforms to lift them from shackles of poverty.

“We will not betray that trust! We are committed to resolutely pursuing the interests and desire of Nigerian workers and by extension the majority of Nigerian masses.

“We, therefore, pledge our loyalty to the NLC, Nigerian workers, Nigerian masses and Nigeria. Our breath comrades, our thoughts and our actions shall be propelled by this avowal!”

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the new president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, describing his emergence as a mark of democracy in labour movement.

Ajaero, former General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Union, was voted on consensus at the 13th NLC’s National Delegates Conference in Abuja.

Hours later, the President issued a statement via his media aide, Garba Shehu, seeking partnership with the newly elected executives of the labour body.

Buhari expressed the hope that Ajaero and his team will continue to be partners to the administration in fulfilling the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“This victory that emerged from a rancour-free congress,” the President notes, “is a mark of the strength of democracy in the nation’s labour movement.

“Today, as he rises to the highest position in the NLC, it is our hope and desire that he will use the position to write a new chapter of progress for all workers and the labour movement in the country and the continent in general.

“After many years of hard work and struggles, the selflessness with which Ajaero dedicated himself today paid off. His journey in the Labour movement has been a remarkable one, marked by many important milestones.”

The President also congratulated Comrade Ayuba Wabba for the successful completion of his tenure as the head of Nigerian workers, wishing him the best in his future undertakings.

NNPC Completes Mechanical Rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery Plant

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, says that it has mechanically completed the rehabilitation of Area 5 Plant of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC). The nation's oil company began rehabilitation of the refinery two years ago, while at the same time, promised to complete its by 31st December 2023. The Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, said as of December 15th, 2023, 84.4% of Area 5 Plant, a key component of the Refinery, and 77.4% of the entire rehabilitation project have been completed. “In our quest to ensure that this refinery is re-streamed to continue to deliver value to Nigerians, we made a promise that we will reach a mechanical completion of phase one of the rehabilitation project by the end of December and get the other plants running in 2024. By Favour & Akinola Ajibade Buoyed by the resolve to deepen the country's revenue base and further and further speed up implementation of capital projects in Nigeria, the  Federal Government will in the next six days, precisely September 1, this year, starts collecting the  new Value Added Tax( VAT).  The government is achieving  this goal through the Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS).  FIRS, in a statement,  said subject to the Finance Act 2023, VAT withheld or collected, VAT on items excluded from building, the new Tertiary Education Tax rate of 3 per cent and Investment Allowances and Convertible Currencies will become effective September 1, 2023. Certain amended provisions of the Finance Act 2023 were enacted on 28th May, 2023 with the effective date of 1st May 2023. However, the effective date was changed to 1st September 2023.
