Chevron Nigeria Limited will support Nigeria's goal of becoming zero carbo
n emission nation by 2060, its Communication Manager, Mr Victor Anyaegbudike has said.
Chevron is one of the oil majors or International Oil Companies (IOCs) operating in the country.
While speaking at the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce ( NACC) breakfast meeting in Lagos, Anyaegbudike noted that the company has taken some steps along that line, prior to 2019, when the Federal Government declared its intention to make 2020 to 2030, a decade of gas revolution.
Recall that the government gave itself a 10 years mandate deepening the use of gas in Nigeria.
During the period, the Federal Government plans to record 95 per cent in the area of gas flaring , with a view to ensure environmental sustainability.
According to him, Chevron is taking a deliberate actions in order to ensure that Nigeria attains its net zero-carbon emission goals.
Explaining further, Anyaegbudike said that gas, which are expected are to be flared are now being gathered in pipelines, with a view to purify and commercialise it for growth of the country.
“Chevron has done a lot to reduce gas flaring, coupled with the fact it is impacting communities in order to achieve 100 per cent zero flaring soon and further stop the incidence of health hazards," he said.
He said Chevron would continue to impact on the environment, through its community and policy's programme.
Chevron through its global's Global Memorandum of Understanding programmes would continue to engage stakeholders, conflict resolution, reputation management and peacebuilding.
He added that the company has achieved 16 years of community development, with over 400 communities impacted and over 600,000 beneficiaries,adding that it was at the forefront of fighting HIV/AIDS and was very committed to the highest standard of environmental conservation practices in Nigeria and throughout its global operations.
In her remarks, the NACC President, Dame Adebola Williams, said that Chevron had in past decades operated successfully as a joint venture partner with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for onshore and offshore operations particularly in Niger Delta.
Chevron, Anyaegbudike said, had partnered United States Agency for International Development and the Niger Delta Partnership Initiative (NDPI) to address socio-economic challenges in the Niger Delta region.
“The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta is incorporated in Nigeria, with a view to implement and support some of its programmes in 2014, stressing that the firm has committed an additional $40 million fund to NDPI through 2019.
Adding that: " Chevron has contributed significantly in its past and existing social investment efforts by focusing on one strategic objective; achieving a peaceful, enabling environment for equitable growth, particularly in the Niger Delta as well as human capacity building initiatives for Nigerians as a whole,” she said.
