The controversy over whether some Bishops were bought to attend the unveiling of the Presidential Running Mate of the All Progressive Congress ( APC), Kashim Shettima or not is still raging six days after as the clergies continually dismissed the allegations that they were paid to attend the event.
The unveiling took place in Abuja on July 20th, this year.
According to the Bishops, neither were they bought nor compelled to address the unveiling ceremony in Abuja.
In a message obtained by the News Mirror, the bishops denounced the claims that money exchanged hands before they attended the programme.
Speaking on behalf of the Bishops at a press conference organised on the issue, the Senior Pastor, Yoke Breakers Prophetic Ministry, Prophet Ugochukwu Ugokwe, said that the bishops attended the unveiling on the basis of integrity and Charisma of Vice President's hopeful.
He said that it was wrong for anybody in Nigeria to associate them with bribery on the issue of attendance of the Shettima's unveiling.
Ugokwe, who doubles as Founder, Muslims and Christians Love Foundation, further said that they attended the unveiling in order to express their goodwill to the politician, whom he said, has contributed greatly to the growth of Borno state, while serving as governor.
He said:" The Bishops, of which I'm one of them, freely attend the unveiling, in order to express our goodwill and lend our support to a man whose tenure as the Governor of Borno State heralded unprecedented support for the Christian faith in the region at the time.
The clergymen,Ugokwe said, have been watching with dismay the unwarranted controversy, insults and the awful threats, which Nigerians have been showing on the issue, since it broke out about a week ago.
He said that the bishops have a divine responsibility either motivated or unmotivated to intervene in the political matters, especially the ones that have to with the peace and progress of the country.
He said that, in the light of this, the Bishops found it expedient to attend the APC event.
He said that: ”Like hundreds of others, on the 20th of July, we were at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, to attend the formal unveiling of Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Adding that: “the bishops were therefore appalled to see our intentions been misrepresented, coupled with the fact that our integrity was called into question. For the avoidance of doubt, we have never attempted to portray ourselves as representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN).
“We went as clergymen and pastors called by God to serve in His vineyard in order to preach
His 'word' to the people. This is a calling we have devoted ourselves to for years. If anyone wishes to verify the truthfulness of this claim and maybe even join our respective ministries, such person is welcomed. We thank those who stood by during and after the time, in which controversy started.
We will continue to pray for a peaceful and united now and after the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.
