FG- Imo: :Regulatory Oversight of The State Electricity Market Is Now Underr ISERC

By Favour Ifeoluwa & Akinola Ajibade  The Federal Government yesterday( Monday) announced the transfer of Regulatory Oversight of the Electricity Market in Imo State to the state electricity regulatory commission, otherwise known as (ISERC). In a statement issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Common( NERC), the development is in compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), reiterating that all transfers envisaged by this order shall be completed by 31 December 2024. According to the Commission,the transfer Order’s provisions include: “Direct Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to incorporate a subsidiary (EEDC SubCo) to assume responsibilities for intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Imo State from EEDC, and that EEDC shall complete the incorporation of EEDC SubCo within 60 days from 27th June 2024. U.S Court sentences Rufai to jail for stealing

Favour Ajibade A Nigerian, Abidemi Rufai, was yesterday, sentenced to five years imprisonment in United States.  Reason: He stole more than $500,000 meant for the treatment of people, that were affected by the recent global pandemic, otherwise known as COVID 19. Rufai was arrested at JFK International Airport in New York, while traveling to Nigeria in May 2021. Seeing with him at the point of arrest was a $10,000 wrist watch and $35,000 gold chain  Rufai pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Tacoma, Washington, in May to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges, and Judge Benjamin Settle issued the sentence Monday. The judge also ordered Rufai to pay more than $600,000 in restitution. Prosecutors said the 45-year-old had a history of defrauding the U.S. government, including using stolen identities to file for emergency relief after hurricanes in Texas and Florida. “When disaster struck, so did Mr. Rufai,” Seattle U.S. Attorney Nick Brown said in a news release.

Nigeria's electricity consumers: 80 per cent lack meters

She said 80 per cent are behind metering, just as Nigerians are complaining about the huge amounts of money, which they are spending on electricity. Favour Ajibade The Federal Government has taken the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) out of the list of investors for the nation’s national carrier,the Nigerian Air. The Ministry of Aviation, in a statement signed by its  James Odaudu, Special Assistant (Public Affairs), James Odaudu, admitted that it included the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) as one of the investors in the nation’s national carrier, in great error. He noted that the NSIA was not mentioned in Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika’s presentation, but only in the general brief given to the media, stressing that it was an error made during its preparation. Nigeria needs $400m annually to achieve net zero emission in 2060

Customs seized 81,425 litres of fuel, condemmed smuggling activities

Customs'officials observing seized fuel  By Akinola Ajibade The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 81, 425 litres of premium motor spirit in Badagry despite being attacked suspected smugglers during night operation, the Acting Controller of the Federal Operation Unit 2 of Service, Mr  Hussein Ejibunu has stated. He said during a briefing at the weekend in Ikeja, Lagos. According to him, the  fuel was packed in jerry cans and sacks by the  suspected smugglers who used dane guns to attack customs officers who made the seizure. The seizures, he said, were borne out of the  painstaking intelligence and perseverance on the part of FOU officers who were committed to protecting the national economy.  He described  the perpetrators of trans-border fuel smuggling as saboteurs that must be stopped. Nigeria earns N890m from non-oil exports in 2022

Below: Emiefele  By Akinola Ajibade Nigeria has  recorded N890million from the non-oil exports proceeds in 2022, the Governor,  Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr Godwin Emiefiele has said. He stated this at the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum as part of activities lined up for the United Nations General Assembly meeting soon. Prior to this period, the country, according to Emiefele, had recorded export repatriation about $64 million in the first quarter of 2022, $622 million in the second quarter, N859 million in the  third quarter,  adding that projections are that by the quarter, the figures would have increased further. He expressed regret that Nigeria is highly dependent on oil revenue proceeds to support its import obligations. Auto crash: 19 died, others injured along Abuja Road

By Akinola Ajibade No fewer than 19 persons lost their lives, while eight others were injured in an auto crash at Yangoji-Gwagwalada Road, Abuja recently. The Federal Road Safety Corps' Acting Marshal Dauda Biu has said. He said this, when he visited the scene of the accident. According to him, the crash involving three vehicles – two Toyota Hiace buses with registration numbers MUB- 30 LG and DWR-985 XJ and an articulated vehicl occured in the Sunday night. “Out of the 31 victims, eight persons comprising of seven males and one female sustained various degrees of injuries, while 19 others were burnt beyond recognition. “Investigation showed that the main causes of the crash were speed limit violation and wrongful overtaking, which eventually resulted in the loss of control,’’ he said. Nigerians face a daunting economy situation

President Muhammad Buhari Nigeria's economy has reached a feverish level,as headline inflation hits 20.52 per cent in August, this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed in its monthly reports recently. Headline inflation is the raw figure reported through the Consumer Price Index( CPI) , that is released monthly by NBS. The CPI calculates the cost to purchase a fixed basket of goods to determine how much inflation is occurring in a broad economy. The country has for some time, been  experiencing a two-digit inflation figures, owing to the fact prices of commodities have reached astronomical level, without commensurate increase in production of goods and services. This development, according to the National Bureau of Statistic (NBS) was fuelled by the disruption in the supply of food products, increase in import cost due to the persistent currency depreciation and general increase in the cost of production. 60,000 Port Harcourt Refinery ready in the next three months

THE Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, on Wednesday, said that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery would become functional by December this year. An end to perennial scarcity of petroleum products in Nigeria is imminent, as old Port Harcourt Refinery come on stream this December. ETI records half-year credit loss of 48b

By Favour Ajibade Ekobank Transnational Incorporation( ETI) has recorded a credit loss of N48billion in the second quarter of 2022, from N21billion in the first quarter,  a development, which showed a difference of N27 billion in-between the two quarters of the year.  In its half-year interim financial report for the period ended June 2022, the bank's loan loss charges expanded by N27billion in the last quarter of June, 2022.
